The Multiplication Practice Loop: An ADHD-First Math Block

A 45-minute multiplication practice block engineered around dopamine, choice, body breaks, and externalised time — so ADHD learners can actually finish.

Grades 3-5
Math (multiplication fluency)
45 minutes (3 × 12-min loops + opener/closer)

Why this pack is different

Almost every published multiplication-fluency lesson assumes a neurotypical attention curve: 30+ minutes of seated drill. This pack inverts the design — the *block structure itself* (three 12-minute loops, each with a body-break and a choice menu) is the intervention. ADHD scaffolds aren't add-ons here, they're load-bearing. It's also useful for the whole class: research on Universal Design for Learning shows ADHD scaffolds raise outcomes for neurotypical students too.

Learning Objectives

  • Recall multiplication facts within the 0-10 set with growing accuracy and speed (student-tracked).
  • Choose a practice mode that matches one's current focus state (self-monitoring of executive function).
  • Complete three 12-minute practice loops with at least 80% engagement, measured by self-report at each loop close.

Materials

  • • Visible analog timer or large-display digital timer (NOT a phone — phones are distractors)
  • • Choice menu sheet (printed): 4 practice modes per loop
  • • Self-tracking sheet: 3 boxes to color in (one per loop) + a dopamine emoji scale
  • • Movement break cards (10 cards: jumping jacks, wall pushes, balance hold, etc.)
  • • Optional: noise-reducing headphones for any student who wants them

Lesson Procedure

  1. 5MIN

    Body-On Opener

Whole class does 90 seconds of standing skip-counting (×3 table while jumping). Then sit. Teacher names the structure: "Three loops. Each loop is short. You pick how you practise. After each loop, you stand up and move."

  2. 12MIN

LOOP 1 — Choose Your Mode

Set timer visibly. Each student chooses ONE of 4 modes: (A) flashcard partner, (B) silent worksheet with quiet music allowed, (C) whiteboard race against self, (D) 'expert station' — solve and explain to a peer. Students may switch modes ONCE if their first choice isn't working. At timer-end: 60-second movement card.

  3. 12MIN

LOOP 2 — Same Structure, Different Mode

Required: pick a DIFFERENT mode this loop. Building flexibility. Self-track: color the loop-2 box and circle the dopamine emoji that matches "how was that?"

  4. 12MIN

    LOOP 3 — Stretch Mode

Pick the mode that felt best. Add stretch: include at least one 2-digit × 1-digit problem. End with the longest movement break (90 seconds, student's choice from card stack).

  5. 4MIN

    Self-Audit Closer

Each student writes one sentence: "Today my brain worked best in mode ___ because ___." Teacher collects only the audit, not the worksheets — the audit is the assessment.

Differentiation

  • →Students with severe ADHD: shorter loops (8 min × 4) with an extra movement card between each.
  • →Students with autism / sensory needs: noise-reducing headphones available without asking; "expert station" mode requires pre-arranged peer (no surprise social demand).
  • →Dyscalculia: choice mode (E) added — fact family triangles with manipulatives.
  • →Advanced learners: loop 3 stretch is a 2-step word problem instead of computation drill.
  • →Multilingual: choice menu and dopamine scale use icons; sentence-stem at closer provided in en/es/fr/zh.

Assessment

Self-audit sentence is the formative artifact. Over 4-6 sessions, the teacher tracks WHICH mode each student gravitates to and whether the dopamine scale trends upward — not raw fact accuracy. Fluency growth is measured weekly with a 60-second untimed-feeling fact check (different format from the practice).

Rubric

Self-monitoring

Emerging / Developing / Secure — based on whether the student can name WHY a mode worked, not just which one.

Engagement across loops

All 3 loops show colored boxes AND a dopamine emoji. Trend matters more than value.

Fact recall (longitudinal)

Tracked across 4-6 sessions, not assessed in a single block — protects against bad-day scoring.

Family Night Discussion Prompt

Your child practised multiplication today using a special 'three loops' format designed for kids whose brains do best with short bursts and movement. Ask: "Which loop felt the best? Why?" — and resist the urge to ask about right vs. wrong answers. We're building self-knowledge first, fluency second.
