Canvas, Schoology, and several other major learning management systems are reporting outages and security incidents affecting schools across the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, and beyond. If you are a teacher scrambling for lesson plans right now — we have you covered. iTeachWise has published 55+ free, ready-to-use K-12 lesson plan templates in PDF format. Each plan includes a Global Standards Mapping page so it works whether you teach to Common Core, the UK National Curriculum, the Australian Curriculum, IB, or another framework. No login. No signup. No LMS. No student data collected. Download and teach.
What's Happening Globally
Reports during the week of May 5–8, 2026 indicate that Canvas and at least one other major LMS are experiencing service disruptions tied to cybersecurity incidents. Schools in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands, and other European countries have reported that staff and students cannot reliably access courses, assignments, or messaging — and that some districts have received early indications of personal data exposure. For confirmed status updates and any official data-breach notifications, refer to your LMS vendor's official status page and your data protection officer rather than social media.
What we know for certain: teachers still need to teach today, tomorrow, and the rest of the week — and many of you are doing it from a position of legitimate concern about platform reliability and student-data exposure. That's why this resource is free, login-less, and collects nothing.

How to Teach Without Canvas This Week
Five practical workarounds while Canvas is down:
1. Email materials directly to students
PDFs attach to any email. Bulk-send via your school directory.
2. Use Google Classroom (separate from Canvas)
If your district permits Google Classroom, use it as a temporary distribution channel and verify student access.
3. Share PDFs via Google Drive
Upload your plans to a shared folder, send a link. Students access on any device.
4. Use iTeachWise for daily lesson planning
Draft custom plans for teacher review without relying on Canvas.
5. Spin up a simple class site with Google Sites
Use the drag-and-drop editor to organize lesson links and documents. Check publishing permissions and student access before sharing.
What To Do About Your Data (US, UK, EU)
If your school's LMS confirms a data incident, follow your vendor's official guidance and your jurisdiction's notification requirements. In the meantime, country-specific actions:
- United States: Notify your district IT and any state-level student-data-privacy contact (e.g. SOPPA in IL, Ed Law 2-d in NY). Watch for FERPA-related advisories.
- United Kingdom: Notify your Data Protection Officer; the school must report a personal-data breach to the ICO within 72 hours of becoming aware of it if it meets the risk threshold.
- EU / EEA: Same 72-hour GDPR breach-notification window applies — contact your DPO and your national supervisory authority. Document everything.
- All regions: Watch school email for phishing attempts that reference the outage by name. Avoid storing sensitive student or family contact information in the affected LMS until the situation is fully resolved. Follow your district's protocol — not advice from social media.
